Either working on spec or by commission, Ken first undertakes a large amount of preparatory work, including experiencing and photographing his subject and internet research. He then crafts a digital design on his computer and transfers this using oil pastel onto a specially selected piece of Ontario limestone.
Carving is done with a series of different techniques depending on the size and complexity of the piece. The equipment used includes Hammer and Chisel, Rotary Tool with diamond burrs, Power Drill with carborundum bits and an Angle Grinder with masonry cutoff wheels and diamond grinding head.
Depending on the desired finish, some pieces are also hand painted using a process of gradually building up colour via washes of acrylic paint.
Painted pieces receive a UV stabilizer coat. The sculpture is then sealed to make it more durable and weatherproof.
