Working both on existing stumps or with sections of felled trees, Ken carves pieces which capture various spirits associated with the location that the wood came from.
Carving is done with a series of different techniques depending on the type and size of wood. The initial form is roughed out with a Chainsaw and this is followed up with a combination of work with an Angle Grinder with sanding discs, Rotary Tool with carbide cutters, and a Hammer and Chisel.
Depending on the desired finish, some pieces are also hand painted using a process of gradually building up colour via washes of acrylic paint.
Painted pieces receive several coats of Sikken's exterior wood preservative to make it more durable and weather resistant.
